Mikumi National Park
About Mikumi National Park
Mikumi National Park is the gateway to the Southern Circuit and is often affectionately called the 'Little Serengeti' due to its open floodplains and incredible wildlife density. Located between the Uluguru Mountains and the Lumango Range, the park is divided by the main road into two distinct sectors, with the northern Mkata Plains being the most wildlife-rich area.\n\nThe Mkata Plains are home to massive herds of buffalo, zebra, and wildebeest, which in turn attract large prides of lions. The park is also famous for its 'Mikumi Lions', which are often found resting in the branches of acacia trees, a behavior usually associated with Lake Manyara. Elephants move through the park in large family groups, and the hippo pools provide reliable sightings of these aquatic giants wallowing in the mud.\n\nWhat makes Mikumi increasingly accessible is its connection to the new SGR high-speed train from Dar es Salaam. Travellers can now reach the park in a fraction of the time it used to take by road, making it the perfect getaway for those staying in the city or as a high-impact start to a longer southern safari adventure.
