Best Time to Visit Serengeti: Month-by-Month Guide for 2025/2026

By Emmanuel Laizer

Is There a "Best" Time to Visit the Serengeti?

The short answer: it depends on what you want to see. The Serengeti is spectacular year-round, but the wildlife experience changes dramatically with the seasons. Whether you dream of witnessing river crossings during the Great Migration, photographing newborn calves on the plains, or enjoying quiet game drives with fewer tourists — there is a perfect time for you.

I have guided safaris in the Serengeti for over 15 years through every season. This guide breaks down each month so you can choose the timing that matches your safari dream.

Serengeti Seasons at a Glance

  • Dry Season (June–October): Peak wildlife viewing, Great Migration river crossings, clear skies, higher prices
  • Green Season (November–May): Lush landscapes, calving season (Jan–Feb), fewer tourists, lower prices
  • Shoulder Months (June, November): Best of both worlds — good weather, reasonable prices, excellent viewing

January – February: Calving Season ★★★★★

Weather: Warm days (25–30°C), occasional afternoon showers
Wildlife highlight: Over 8,000 wildebeest calves born daily on the short-grass plains
Crowds: Moderate — popular with photographers and migration chasers

This is my personal favourite time in the Serengeti. The southern plains (Ndutu area) explode with life as hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth within a few weeks. Predators are never far away — lions, cheetahs, and hyenas hunt the vulnerable newborns, creating extraordinary wildlife viewing.

March – May: Green Season (Low Season) ★★★★

Weather: Long rains, afternoon thunderstorms, lush green landscapes
Wildlife highlight: Excellent birdwatching, newborn animals, fewer tourists
Crowds: Low — the quietest time of year

Many travellers avoid the long rains, but this is a hidden gem. The parks are empty, prices drop significantly (up to 40%), and the scenery is breathtakingly beautiful. Game viewing is still excellent in Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire. If you are on a budget, this is your time.

June – July: Beginning of the Dry Season ★★★★★

Weather: Cool mornings, warm days, clear skies
Wildlife highlight: Grumeti River crossings begin; predators are active near water sources
Crowds: Building — popular months, book early

The herds begin moving north, and the Grumeti River crossings start in June. This is also an excellent time for general game viewing as animals concentrate around permanent water sources. The western corridor is particularly good during these months.

August – October: Peak Season & River Crossings ★★★★★

Weather: Dry, cool mornings, warm days
Wildlife highlight: Mara River crossings — the most dramatic wildlife spectacle on Earth
Crowds: High — book 6–12 months ahead

This is the most famous time for a Serengeti safari. The herds gather at the Mara River in the northern Serengeti, and crossing attempts create heart-stopping drama as crocodiles wait in the waters. If you want to witness the iconic river crossings, target mid-August through October. Our Northern Serengeti Explorer (7 days) is specifically designed for this season.

November – December: Short Rains (Shoulder Season) ★★★★

Weather: Short rains, green landscapes returning
Wildlife highlight: The herds move south; excellent birding; fewer tourists
Crowds: Low to moderate — good deals available

The short rains bring the landscape back to life. The herds begin their journey south, and the game viewing remains excellent with fewer vehicles. November is a wonderful time for photographers who want dramatic skies and green backdrops.
